Royal Sapien Artist Profile

Real Names: Ben Mautner
Profile:

Royal Sapien is New York City-based producer and DJ, Ben Mautner.

Originally hailing from Cincinnati, Ben quickly embraced the midwest rave community and began DJing at age 12. By 14, he was spinning at parties and organizing events of his own.

The Royal Sapien nom de musique came about in 2002 when Ben started focusing intently on producing dance music. Making tunes specifically for his own DJ sets, the earliest club-friendly songs were bootlegs layering classics like CeCe Penniston's "Finally" over Olav Basoski's "Opium Scumbagz," (as played by Olav Basoski!) and Tori Amos's "Caught A Light Sneeze" over Hybrid's remix of BT's "Godspeed." One such mashup, Kosheen's "Catch" over Ferry Corsten's "Punk" was actually picked up by a label and released as a very limited edition record, selling out almost instantly. Another bootleg breaks remix of Iio's Rapture caught the attention of a Florida-based label who also issued a very limited edition bootleg that reached #1 on Satellite Records' breaks chart.

Royal Sapien moved on to more high profile remixes for the likes of Oxyd Records in Italy. The remixes of Salt Pervert's "5am Soho" reached #1 on the DMC Buzz Chart. Now, five albums and over three hundred productions later, he is planning dozens more releases on Olaris Records and a new studio album. Royal Sapien is also on Fade Records in New York, recently releasing special edition remixes for Funk Harmony Park's "My Truth," which have been lauded around the globe as "an emotion-laden chunk of beauty" and "stunning." The Back Room mix was the most requested song of the week for three weeks in a row on Santa Monica's mega-station KCRW.

Royal Sapien mixed the new Fade Records compilation Audio Tour 2 with Chris Fortier, a retrospective of Fade and sister label FDS, released to critical acclaim in May 2007 and garnering five dancing men from DMC Update. As of 2007, Royal Sapien productions are being played around the world by Chris Fortier, Jimmy Van M, Hybrid, Hernan Cattaneo, Jondi and Spesh, D:Fuse, Chloe, and dozens of other top-flight DJs. Look for Royal Sapien releases on Olaris, Oxyd, Fade, Proton, Looq, Polytechnic, Elektrotribe, Quarterlife, Arctic Wave, Amalgam Audio, Strater, Bellarine, Airport Route, and several other fine labels.

At the moment Ben is planning DJ dates around the world to spread his unique fusion of all beats electronic. He has been featured on John Digweed's Transitions on Kiss100, the Transitions Podcast, XM Satellite Radio, Sirius Satellite Radio, Proton Radio, Frisky Radio, the Balance Record Pool Show, Global Scum paired with Dave Seaman, and many other broadcasts. He hosts Royal Sounds, a monthly two hour live format show on Proton Radio, in addition to his monthly show Movement on Frisky Radio that explores progressively eclectic sounds. The free Royal Sapien Podcast can be found in the iTunes Music Store.

Dido - Everything To Lose (ATFC remix) [Ultra Records]
ATFC’s picture hangs in the House Music Hall of Fame. OK, so it’s on a rusty nail in the toilet under the stairs at the end of the hall, but the point is that it’s there; a proud testament to one man’s ability to both devastate dance-floors with his explosive, peak-time sets and deliver sickeningly slick productions at an awe-inspiring rate. This heavyweight of House was born to Anglo-Turkish parents who immediately named him Aydin Hasirci; Ottoman Turkish for “He who blends 2 records skilfully, is a purveyor of slammin’ yet soulful house music whilst simultaneously being a master at whipping up a delicious Spaghetti Carbonara”. Longwinded yes, aspirational most certainly but also quite a burden to lay on a newborn baby. Happily though the young Aydin blossomed into exactly what his parents had prophesised and now occupies a unique position within the occasionally rich and often beautiful world of dance music. Recently, ATFC even had his own dedicated compilation to play around with. ATFC In The House London ’10 showed what happens when you let a master craftsman loose in the studio for an extended period of time.

Adam K - Complicated (vocal mix) [Hotbox Digital]
For Toronto, Canada's Adam K, it's tremendous amounts of skill, creativity, hard work, and years of perfecting his craft that have catapulted him into the upper echelon of dance music.
Fuelling his stellar live sets is over 15 years of experience in mastering sound design, audio engineering and producing. His keen ear for shaping sounds and knack for composing emotional hooks fuse together to create his trademark style. Adam's solo and collaborative projects have dominated the underground including landmark tracks such as "I Can Feel", "You're Not Alone", "Question", and "From The Speaker" which melded the minds of Adam, long-time friend Soha, and Toolroom frontman Mark Knight. Of course it was another collaboration with Soha that captivated the world with "Twilight". Named an Essential New Tune on the legendary BBC Radio 1, Pete Tong set the tone for one of the biggest records of 2008, which was confirmed by landing at #2 for the best-selling tracks overall on Beatport that year. Adam's music is a favourite of the world's top DJs seeing releases such as "Complicated" be a staple in sets from the likes of Tiesto, Above & Beyond, Gareth Emery, Matt Darey, Rank1, Judge Jules, Cosmic Gate, Menno de Jong, and more.

Depeche Mode - Fragile Tension (Laidback Luke remix) [Mute]
Luke (Luke van Scheppingen) was born in Manila, Philippines, but grew up in the Netherlands. He loved guitars, graffiti, hip-hop and house, and found a mentor in Dobre (Chocolate Puma). He was just a teenager when he began producing, taking the 'laid back' tag from Snoop Dogg's 'Gin & Juice'. Yet by 1995 he was putting out tracks and from 96 was remixing for established artists, in addition to DJing professionally. Once beating a Dutch DMC champ in battle, Luke showed the world how he rolls: skilfully fusing an array of flavours, edits, bootlegs and a cappellas into a slick signature style. He even released an album, Psyched U, in 1999. But it wasn't until Virgin signed 'Rocking With The Best' and released his 2002 album, Electronic Satisfaction, that his profile soared. Luke's Dance Valley anthem, 'We Can Not Get Enough', then blew up. He also mixed his first compilation, Windmill Skill. His discography was therefore already looking prolific as he remixed Daft Punk (who were a huge early influence), Murk, Oliver Lieb and Tom Stephan. And to up the output in 2004, he introduced his own label, Mixmash. Luke is laid back about everything except music. Since landing a new entry – 46 – in DJ magazine's Top 100 DJs Poll of 2008, it's clear that Holland's homeboy is on fire like never before. It's why he was selected to ignite the Stealth Live! CD series with a near perfect club mix. Why he was snapped up for a weekly Friday show by French station Radio FG. Why his own party, Super You&Me, is such a winner. Why he is bustin' up bassbins from Australia to the Americas – and ripping up a storm working with everyone from Diplo to Tiësto. Yes, Luke's stratospheric success befits his world-beating talents and is reaching new levels of hotness in 2010!

Fedde le Grand ft. Mr. V - Back & Forth (Fedde's Future Funk remix) [Flamingo Recordings]
2009 has been a truly phenomenal year for Dutch artist Fedde le Grand. With a glittering career that includes worldwide number ones, packed arenas, throbbing dance floors, A-list collaborations, a raft of international awards and a debut artist album ‘Output’ that hit over 60 countries worldwide, it’s been a year that has cemented his reputation as one of the most forward-thinking, in-demand, creative forces in global music. But though this may have been an impressive ‘beginning’, it was just that – a beginning. There was more to come from le Grand and the world was about to sit up and take notice of the Dutchman. Let Me Think About It, The Creeps and 3 Minutes to Explain all followed, setting club-land on fire and stamping Fedde’s name all over the global music charts. There was nobody anywhere that fell short of Fedde’s magic – including Grammy Award-winning Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am, international electronic godfather Fatboy Slim and Madonna – need we go on? That the Queen of Pop should have picked up on Fedde came as no surprise to anyone with one eye on his meteoric career. After using Put your hands up to promote her Sticky and Sweet tour, she then requested Fedde’s remix skills for her global smash hit Give It 2 Me.

B.Y.O.B vs. J Majik & Wickaman - Save My Life (Lazy Rich instrumental) [Loaded]
J Majik & Wickaman have well established themselves within the heavy weight elite of the drum & bass scene as producers and DJs in their own right. 2008 saw J Majik & Wickaman grace the UK's official top 40 chart with their critically acclaimed dancefloor anthem 'Crazy World', selling over 20,000 copies and placed on BBC Radio One's B list after previously achieving two record of the week's from Scott Mills and Greg James. Into 2009, after a lengthy tour of America they are back in the studio and have already turned a classic electro house record from The Egg 'Walking Away' into a contender for best Drum & Bass remix of the year after massive specialist support from Pete Tong, Annie Mac and Galaxy FM's Andi Durrant. The Deadmau5 'I Remember' Remix will be hitting the airwaves soon!

Janelle Monae - Tightrope (Robbie Rivera's Juicy Bigroom dub) [Juicy Music]
She’s been called “a different kind of diva” by Vogue Magazine and “a true visionary… one of the most important signings of my career” by Sean “Diddy” Combs. For singer, songwriter, and high funkstress Janelle Monáe, however, the impetus remains the same as it’s been since before her Grammy-nominated debut EP Metropolis, Suite I: The Chase captured the imaginations of fans and fellow artists. As she readies her first full-length LP, The Arch Android, her focus remains on stirring your soul, moving your feet and simply, creating good music. The journey of the past two years, she says, has taught her to “embrace the things that make me unique and to continue being an even bigger agent of change, especially as an artist.” Her hope is that listeners, inspired by the album, “embrace their own superpowers and become the voice of change, the hero—or The ArchAndroid—in their own communities.”

Crookers ft. Roisin Murphy - Royal T (Foamo remix) [Southern Fried]
Crookers are dj Phra and Bot; two dj's/producers who met in 2003 and soon got to work together as they had the same tastes and a similar musical background. Both have been producing and djing on their own before creating the Crookers team: Bot was introduced to music learning to play instruments like piano and guitar and then moved to synths, turntables and sequencers while Phra started djing at the early age of 11 and then was introduced to the italian Hip Hop scene as an Mc. All these influences are mixed up in their sets with the special add of their sounds done with the legendary MPC sampler.

Lazy Jay - Float My Boat (Moguai remix) [Big & Dirty Records]
It’s almost near the impossible to keep up with the number of productions this bad boy from Belgium is popping out of his studio. Also hard to believe that nearly every release is a spot on dancefloor killer! With the ever growing support on his material from the house to the trance scene, things are looking big for Lazy Jay.It’s the bigboynoize, yeah baby! Big Beats and Dirty Sounds, that’s what the Big & Dirty style is all about. From nasty electro influenced house beats to minimal melodic noises, we leave room for everything in-between to join forces.

Kaskade ft. Haley - Dynasty (Dada Life remix) [Ultra]
They don’t care about genres. They don’t care about smartness. They don’t care about the things you care about.Dada Life just want to make you jump up and down. Then make you crash into a wall with a smile on your face. The formula has been a winner since the start. In summer 2006 Dada Life released ”Big Time” and DJ:s all over got their first take on the duo. Since then there has been a steady stream of records: ”The Great Fashionista Swindle”, ”Vote Yes” and “Fun Fun Fun” as well as the full length album “Just Do The Dada”. Dada Life have also remixed artists such as Laidback Luke, Alex Gopher and Dan Black/Kid Cudi. The tunes are played by everyone from Crookers, Eric Prydz and Benny Benassi to David Guetta, as well as featured on tons of compilations. Tiësto quickly understood how to Do the Dada – and the duo played before him on his massive USA-tour 2009

Marco V ft. Khashassi - Scenario (Daniel Portman remix) [In Charge]
Khashassi made her Radio 1 debut in 2009 when Dutch DJ's/Producers Marco V and Benjamin Bates remixed her original songs 'Solitary Confinement' 'Scenario' and 'Predator' (available on itunes/spotify) for their best selling album 'Propaganda'! "Mary-Anne took us to far away places with her lifting tones. Her heartfelt songs left us in no doubt how talented she is"Marcus Reeves, Acoustic Exposure 2009.
Born into an actively musical family, I broke into song at a very early age, with close influences ranging from Jewel and The Police, to Portishead and Alanis Morrisette later on in life. I had a fantastic childhood with really encouraging parents and was performing gospel accapella harmonies with my sister (www.laurajanemusic.webs.com) from the age of 6 at National Bluegrass festivals. Since then I have continued to develop a unique style on vocals, guitar, piano and percussion which I adapt to the production of my original material including 2 highly acclaimed albums to date- 'Mellow Acoustic Rage' and 'Enforced Freedom'. 'The Dark Side of Beautiful' is now in the making!
