| Eelke Kleijn Artist Profile |
| Real Names: | Eelke Kleijn |
| Profile: | Ever since his 2003 landing in the world of electronic music, Eelke Kleijn has been a name synchronous with quality. Fans and enthusiasts worldwide have come to love the sympathetic Dutchman for his affectionate sound, unique productions and dynamic DJ sets, which have taken him from Mexico to Russia, and almost everywhere in between. And it's not just the fans that are moved by his work; avid followers include internationally renowned DJs such as Hernán Cattáneo, Sasha and Dave Seaman, who repeatedly drop his tracks in clubs and festivals around the world. Eelke's real breakthrough came in 2006 when Nick Warren included '8 Bit Era' on his 'GU 030: Paris' compilation. A few months later, Global Underground snapped up his debut artist album 'Naturally Artificial', which hit the market late 2007 and received critical acclaim from press and reviewers worldwide. The attention from an international best-selling label also sky rocketed his DJ career, playing at massive events such as Moonpark in Buenos Aires, Dance Valley, Extrema Outdoor and Sensation to club gigs at the world famous Warung in Brazil and Privilege Ibiza. Throughout the years, Eelke's increasing profile has given him the opportunity to remix numerous well known acts and DJs, including Way Out West, Hybrid, Miss Nine and Sander Kleinenberg. His area of work extends well beyond the borders of conventional dance music however, having written music for clients such as NIKE & Joolz and often being credited as a mixing and mastering engineer for various artists and labels. Besides his work as a DJ and producer, Eelke also successfully runs the record label 'Outside the Box Music', launched in 2006. His similarly named radio show and podcast has grown into an internet sensation, reaching tens of thousands of people each month. Recently Eelke announced the release of his second artist album, 'Untold Stories', in Autumn 2010 on Manual Music. The philosophy behind his second full-length album is that music should be continuous, an uninterrupted, emotional experience. Having written the album as one single piece instead of a collection of individual tracks, Untold Stories is truly Eelke's way of pushing boundaries with music. With a second album scheduled and an incredible amount of work to look back upon, Eelke Kleijm establishes himself not just as another producer or DJ, but as a modern day electronic composer. |

| Exclusive Eelke Kleijn Interview |
Mr Eelke Kleijn will now answer your questions

My name is Eelke Kleijn
My friends call me Eel
My Birthdate is 11-06-83
I consider Rotterdam in the Netherlands my home base
I’d love to work with Mark Ronsonin the future.
The next place I’d love to travel is South America but not for gigs, but just for travel so i can actually see something this time.
The first album I ever bought was 2 Unlimited.
My current favorite style of Electronic Music is Progressive House
If I weren’t a producer/DJ I would be an IT nerd
The last song i listened to on repeat was probably one of my own while mixing down
I wish I could stop my head from working over hours sometimes, but I can’t help it!
My most memorable party moment was Moonpark in Buenos Aires
I’m deathly afraid of turning 85 and finding out there's no one left but you
I use Cubase to create my music.
When I party, I usually can't drink 'cause I'm driving
Armin van Buuren inspired me to become a producer/DJ
In 5 years I would like to write music for other artists and movies
I’ve always wanted to skydive, but haven’t gotten the chance to yet
You’d be shocked to find out that I have never visited the Euromast in Rotterdam
I don’t leave home without my earplugs.
Walk Us through a typical day with Eelke Kleijn.
Basically I get up between 8 and 9 in the morning. Get some coffee, have some yoghurt, wave my girl off to her work and jump behind my Mac to check emails, promos, work that has to be done etc. Takes me anywhere between 1 and 3 hours. Then it's off to the studio which is at the top floor of our house where I spend all the remaining time writing music or remixing until the clock hits 5 or 6 in the afternoon. I go into the kitchen, my girlfriend comes home from work and we have dinner together. Then I either continue my work in the studio until about 10 or 11 in the evening or I'm off to the indoor climbing wall where I spend about 3 nights a week. Unless it's a weekend day, which are often spend on the airplane ;-)
So for Untold Stories, you mentioned that at times seemed to be as many technical problems as there were inspirational problems, what were some of these problems?
Well, basically I wanted to write an album which wasn't really based on individual song but which was more like a continuous flow of music. But along the way I discovered how difficult this actually was. Not just in terms of having the different tracks flow into each other, but also how to achieve this technically. I started work originally from 1 arrangement but 10 minutes into the CD I was literally using up all the CPU power and memory I had. So you start to think of the next move. Will I write the next track in another arrangement and make the connection later on? Do I export all these things and work from audio? Do I copy the end of the previous track and work from there? I also wanted to be able to go back and change things, volumes, mixdowns. Honestly this gave me headaches at night.
So how did you overcome these problems and what you mean that everything just fell into place?
Eventually it all worked out and I decided to export each track individually to audio and use 1 arrangement just for audio playback. This final CD arrangement consisted of more than 500 audio channels once the CD was nearing the end, so I was more than pushing the boundaries of what I could do with my setup.

What’s the inspiration behind Michael Castledine’s album cover for Untold Stories? I've always liked hand drawn art. So when we held an artwork competition for Untold Stories, I was really looking for something artistic rather than just another picture of a landscape or so. Many people submitted their work and I saw some really amazing art in Michael's portfolio. We approached him to do something similar for the album, my idea was a sort of tree that branched out, I've had that in mind ever since I came up with the CD name. And I think it turned out wonderfully, all the artwork on the physical CD is unique and specifically made for this project. |
Michael Castledine's website from Collaborate Studios who designed the artwork for my new album www.cs.collaboratestudios.com
| What about the album cover picture for Naturally Artifical? where and what is it a picture of? To be completely honest, I never really found out where it came from. Global Underground suggested it to me, and I know the picture was shot by a photographer from France. I had to get used to the picture a bit at first, but everyone I showed it to said it had something really unique to it. And a few days after I received it we decided to go for it, very glad I did because I still feel it's a remarkable photo. |

Many of your productions seem to be concepts. (ie, Luigi’s Magic Mushroom, The Lone Ranger, … etc). How do you approach a production? Do you think of a concept then build on it? Or do you produce a track and then name it?
Actually almost all of my tracks are written first and then named later. The entire Untold Stories album was untitled for a while, although I had some interesting titles I wanted to use in the back of my head. Then once the time comes to name the tracks, I will sit down, listen, and think about the feeling a track gives me. Sometimes it's really easy, for instance Violintermezzo from my new album is an intermezzo with a violin. And I might also look at sounds I used, see what those are named. There's usually not really a deeper meaning behind any of the titles except for the tracks on my albums, some of those are more personal or represent something I've been feeling. Take for instance Survival of the Fattest on my new album, of course it's taken from Darwin. With the current state of our health care, Darwin doesn't really have much to say anymore. You don't need to be fit to survive. You can be fat and survive just as well. Doesn't have anything to do with the track at all, but it's a concept that just came to mind one day and I thought it would be great to use as a title.
What about Theme for Nosey? Theme for Spliffy? Who or What are Nosey and Spliffy?
Those are our cats. Sadly enough, Spliffy died at the age of 15 a few weeks back. So I am very glad he got his theme before he passed away.
Aside from club music, you also produce a variety of background music for commercials such as Nike, and other web projects such as Joolz and Virtual Events. Tell us a little about that.
I've always wanted to do different kind of music, sometimes I have periods in which dance music doesn't inspire me, and I end up listening to a lot of pop or rock. And in those periods I also like to write different kind of music. It's still a dream for me to work on a movie or video game someday, or cooperate as a producer with top 40 artists. Nowadays I'm writing music for short commercials and things like that. The Nike thing was for one of their ads in the Create_Space campaign, it was wicked to work on that. All the tricks that don't work for dance music can work for these videos. And it's something completely different to write music that has to fit a video, but also has to peak at certain key points where it has to complement the animation. Together with playing gigs and producing dance music it's a great way to keep my work interesting and varied.
Anything else you would like NOCTURNAL listeners to know about?
I'm also running the radio show 'Outside the Box' which is available through a number of FM and online stations and also through the podcast on my site.

Moreover, Deluxe continued his DJing, for which he was likewise acclaimed, and also did a lot of remix work for big names like Basement Jaxx, Layo & Bushwacka!, Kylie Minogue, and even the White Stripes. All of this culminated in 2004 with Underwater's release of Deluxe's full-length debut, The Little Ginger Club Kid, which compiled many of his more popular singles as well as several new productions like "Mundaya (The Boy).” - By Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide.

Avicii had only been producing a few months when his friends noticed thatthe productions were amazingly professional and that they had just witnessed a great talent being born. Alex Henning ft. Zara - Wish I (John Puzzle remix) [Whist Records]
John Puzzle (Radu Ionut Adrian) was born in the summer of '82 in the city Ramnicu Sarat, Romania. Music was his first passion and this was discovered by his parents at the age of 4 when he was playing drums using two spoons and a dining table. At the age of 7 he began taking piano lessons in his home town until high school where he discovered the way to create electronic music with computers and synthesizers. That was the moment when he decided that house, techno and trance were the perfect music genres for expressing himself. Being a professional pianist and a classical music fan he was always attracted by pure melody, soft and silky sounds and his style is driven by these elements with enormous success making his tracks original and catchy. His main target is to tell his story to the world trough his tasty and pleasant sound.
